VW Golf Spain Club Celebrates 22nd Annual National Rally in Basque Country
A vibrant community of Volkswagen Golf enthusiasts gathered in Spain’s Basque region for the 22nd annual “KDD” – a national rally celebrating the iconic vehicle and its devoted fanbase. The event, held in Gernika-Lumo (Vizcaya), drew over 60 meticulously maintained VW Golfs spanning the model’s 50-year history.
A Tradition of National Gatherings
For 22 years, the VW Golf Spain Club has hosted an annual national gathering, known as a “KDD,” rotating locations to accommodate a growing membership and showcase the diverse landscapes of Spain. This year’s choice of the Basque Country offered a unique backdrop steeped in history and culture. “With the desire to cover the entire national territory and accommodate more people, each year it is held in a different place,” a club representative stated.
Gernika-Lumo: History and Hospitality
The event’s central location was the Astra parking lot, chosen for its proximity to the center of Gernika-Lumo and its evocative surroundings. The parking lot’s location, adjacent to Civil War bunkers used during the city’s infamous bombings, served as a poignant reminder of the region’s complex past. Attendees arrived between 9:00 and 11:00,showcasing a stunning array of Golf models. DJ Samuel Montes, a club member and frequent collaborator, provided entertainment throughout the morning.
Basque Gastronomy and Camaraderie
Following the car displays and social mingling,participants enjoyed a communal lunch at the SASOIE restaurant in Gernika. the meal provided an chance for attendees to connect over shared passions and stories. “Endless talks, anecdotes and stories from other events” filled the air, fostering a strong sense of community. The afternoon continued with an awards ceremony recognizing the best-maintained car, the attendee who traveled the furthest distance, and those embodying the “GOLF spirit,” alongside a raffle with prizes for all.
Scenic Routes and Automotive History
The weekend’s itinerary extended beyond the initial gathering. A scenic drive to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a picturesque coastal location, offered attendees breathtaking views and a memorable experience. Sunday’s activities centered around a visit to the Loizaga Tower,home to what is claimed to be the world’s largest collection of Rolls-Royce automobiles. “just getting to the place…is worth it, but the reward when you get there is immense: a castle and a land full of ships full of cars,” one attendee remarked. The collection, featuring models in pristine condition, captivated enthusiasts with their history and craftsmanship.
Karting Competition and Farewell Dinner
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, a karting competition at gueñes karting, Leisure kart, provided a thrilling challenge.The event culminated in a farewell dinner at Asador Toki-on in Llodio-Landio, offering a final opportunity for attendees to connect before departing.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of the event was attributed to the dedication of organizers Luis, Kevin, and Antia, along with the support of VW Galicia and the enthusiastic participation of club members. The club extended gratitude to all involved, emphasizing that the event would not have been possible without their collective efforts.
