LONDRA. The defeat comes while Jannik Sinner is on the field in the round of 16 of the Beijing tournament against Safiullin (3-6, 6-2 partial score). THE’World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed to the Tas (Tribunal of Arbitration for Sport) against the acquittal of Jannik Sinner in relation to Clostebol case. Wada itself makes this known with a statement in which it underlines that “the finding of ‘absence of fault or negligence’ is not correct under current regulations”, and asks for the no. 1 of the world one stop for one to two years.

The doping case involving the South Tyrolean tennis player, acquitted by Itia (International Tennis Integrity Agency) began when it became known, after the Paris Games in which Sinner had not taken part due to tonsillitis, that Sinner himself had tested positive on March 10during the Indian Wells tournament. Traces of the clostebol metabolite, i.e. what remains after the prohibited substance has been metabolised in the body but not yet completely expelled, also emerged in a second check carried out outside the tournament eight days later.

In both cases Sinner had successfully appealed against the provisional suspension that is triggered in these situations and was thus able to continue playing. The world number 1 had explained that he came into contact with clostebol due to contamination. The substance is in fact contained in Trofodermin, over-the-counter drug in Italy used to treat a small wound from his then physiotherapistGiacomo Naldi, who had performed massages and other treatments on Sinner in those days, who then fired him after the case came to light. As for the no. 1 in the world, on several occasions, even after winning the US Open, had expressed his bitterness by revealing that he had been influenced by the affair and had overcome it “with the help of those who have always been close to me”.

The press release published on the Wada website with the Anti-Doping Agency appealing against Sinner’s acquittal in the Clostebol affair: “The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirms that it has submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Thursday 26 September for the case of the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, found by an independent tribunal of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to be without fault or negligence for having twice tested positive for clostebol, a prohibited substance, in March 2024. WADA believes that the finding of “no fault or negligence” is not correct in accordance with current regulations”.

”WADA is calling for a period of ineligibility of between one and two years. WADA does not seek disqualification of any result, other than that already imposed by the court of first instance. As the matter is now pending before CAS, WADA will make no further comment at this time.”
