WADA names Russia the leader in the number of anti-doping rule violations in 2019

In 2019, 1,914 anti-doping rule violations were identified, according to a press release from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Russia took the first place in the number of violations.

In total, representatives of 117 countries in 89 sports committed violations. 1573 violations were recorded after doping tests. Another 377 violations were identified in the course of investigations. The number of such violations increased by 34% compared to 2018, WADA CEO Olivier Niggli called this figure “one of the most important aspects.”

“Many of them (violations. – “B”) were identified based on evidence gathered through intelligence and investigations. It is obvious that the work of WADA and other anti-doping organizations in this area gives good results for pure sport, ”he stressed.

According to WADA, Russian athletes committed 167 anti-doping rule violations. Most often, Russians did not follow the rules in track and field (35) and weightlifting (21), as well as in powerlifting (14).

In December 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed the legality of WADA’s application of super-harsh sanctions to Russia in connection with the detected manipulations with the database of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory. However, the CAS has been cut in half, from four to two years. Mr. Niggli was disappointed with the decision of the sports court.
