“I want to be the president of all Argentine families,” says Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro in the video with which he announced this afternoon his presidential candidacy to compete in the internal Unión por la Patria.
The Minister of the Interior confirmed at 6:30 p.m. the version that began to run since Thursday morning. Contrary to what had been speculated, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was not the channel to announce the candidacy of the Kirchner sector of Unión por la Patria, a name that, on the contrary, was announced by the Vice President of the Nation when it was registered.
“I deeply love my country. It is necessary to represent again (image of Cristina Kirchner from May 25 appears) and defend our federal country. Let’s recover the hope and pride of being Argentines ”, De Pedro maintains in the video in which he does not mention Juan Manzur as his running mate.
But the outgoing governor of Tucumán appears in the video, as do other governors, with whom De Pedro strengthened a relationship from the Ministry of the Interior.
The confirmation of the candidacy of Wado de Pedro occurred shortly before the campaign event of Daniel Scioli and his sector “Unidos Triunfaremos”, which the Brazilian ambassador confirmed will go to the internal one. Aníbal Fernández, Santiago Cafiero, and Hugo Moyano participated in the event. Peronism has not had an internal one at the presidential level for 35 years.
Before the announcement on the networks, De Pedro was at the headquarters of the Argentine Industrial Union, where he was received by its owner, Daniel Funes de Rioja. “There is a little bit left, be patient,” he replied then. The first versions of the release of De Pedro began to circulate early, to the point that there was talk about an “imminent announcement by Cristina Kirchner. But two hours before the video, the Pedro-Juan Manzur formula was given as fact by the governor-elect of Tucumán, Osvaldo Jaldo, and by the Kirchnerist deputy, Hugo Yasky.
Jaldo (who has just dealt an electoral beating to Together for Change with Manzur as head of the campaign) said that this formula has the support of the majority of Peronist and allied governors.
Yasky published the UP campaign poster: “Wado&Manzur&Cristina&Argentina”. To these pronouncements, the national senator for Tucumán, Pablo Yedlin, joined. “There is 2023! This formula represents a Federal Argentina”, wrote Yedlin.
Simultaneously with the growing versions of the “Wado-Manzur” formula, two governors visited President Alberto Fernández at the Casa Rosada. Gerardo Zamora (Santiago del Estero) and Raúl Jalil (Catamarca), according to reports, asked President Fernández to intercede with Scioli, so that he lowers his candidacy. The Governors League ruled two weeks ago in favor of Peronism offering a “unity list.” Ricardo Quintela confirmed that Jalil and Zamora spoke “on behalf of the league.” The same position in favor of a single list was adopted days later by the CGT.
Until last night Sergio Massa and the Renewal Front did not make any electoral statement.
De Pedro’s presidential move confirmed that Axel Kicillof will run for re-election in Buenos Aires.
“We have urgent problems,” De Pedro acknowledges in the video, and mentions “the irresponsible debt that they left us, the drama of inflation and unacceptable poverty: we must address these emergencies without excuses,” he proposes in a conciliatory tone.
The figure of Manzur, as head of the interior among his peers the Peronist governors, was confirmed on Sunday the 11th, with the electoral victory in Tucumán, with almost 60 percent of the votes.
Tucumán is the sixth province on the electoral roll and the head of a region with a hard vote for Peronism. The governors of the Norte Grande are convinced that Peronism has consolidated some 15 points there over the historical 40 at the national level. Any electoral strategy must contain them.
That Sunday the 11th at night, Jaldo and Manzur received De Pedro. Manzur asked for patience when asked if he would accompany the minister on a formula. On Wednesday he was received by Cristina Kirchner in her Senate office, where she finished sealing one of the presidential binomials for the 13A Passage.
Wado de Pedro, 42, deployed during his tenure as minister what he called the “Federal Agenda.” With the Federal Investment Council as headquarters, De Pedro linked up with the governors to jointly design a Federal Development Plan.
He shared a tour of Israel with governors of different political persuasions in April 2022. Together with the governors of the Great North, he traveled to the United States to bring a proposal to the World Bank on federal infrastructure works.
