Drones of unknown origin attacked, on the night of Thursday, 29, to Friday, an air base in the east of Libya where there were mercenaries from the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, without causing casualties, indicated a military source. The source, who requested anonymity, told AFP that drones “of unknown origin hit Al Charruba air base, located 150 km southeast of Benghazi (east), where elements of the Wagner Group were present.” “The attacks did not cause victims,” he added. Libya is a country sunk in a deep political crisis since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, weakened by divisions between East and West and foreign interference. Between 2019 and 2020, Khalifa Hafter, the ‘de facto’ leader of eastern Libya, resorted to fighters from other countries and mercenaries from the Wagner Group in his attempt to take control of the capital Tripoli. After that, hundreds of members of the Russian paramilitary group remained active in eastern and southern Libya.
