Home Office Announces Wagner Mercenary Group to Be Declared a Terrorist Organisation
The Home Office has made an announcement declaring the Wagner mercenary group a terrorist organisation. A draft order will be presented in parliament, making it illegal to support or be a member of the Russian group in the UK. Wagner has gained notoriety for its involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as its participation in conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic, Sudan, and Libya.
The decision to proscribe the group under the Terrorism Act 2000 was made due to the organization’s extensive activities and the threat it poses to British nationals abroad. Home Secretary Suella Braverman described Wagner as a “violent and destructive organization” that acts as a military tool for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime. Braverman also emphasized the group’s involvement in looting, torture, and barbarous murders.
The proscription order aims to make it clear in UK law that Wagner is a terrorist organization that poses a threat to global security. The Home Office’s action demonstrates the UK’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Braverman emphasized that while Putin’s regime determines what to do with the organization it created, Wagner’s activities only serve the Kremlin’s political goals.
The announcement comes shortly after the death of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash. Prigozhin had recently mounted a short-lived armed rebellion against Russia’s military leadership, posing a significant challenge to Putin’s authority.
