by ethan.brook News Editor

A 30-year-old man is in custody following an overnight pursuit across Auckland and into the Waikato region that began with an alleged armed carjacking and ended with a standoff inside a crashed vehicle. The incident, which unfolded late Monday night, involved a police chase, the deployment of road spikes, and the use of a taser and a police dog during the man’s arrest. The focus now is on the initial carjacking and potential further charges, as police continue their investigation into the events.

The sequence of events began around 11:40 p.m. In Auckland, when police were alerted to a vehicle reported stolen from Dominion Road in what authorities are describing as a carjacking involving a firearm. Officers quickly located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit, aided by the police Eagle helicopter, as it headed towards East Tāmaki. The incident quickly escalated as the driver attempted to evade capture, leading to a dangerous high-speed chase through residential areas.

Dangerous Pursuit Through Auckland

According to Inspector Grant Tetzlaff, the driver “took off at speed” when officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it exited the motorway onto East Tāmaki Road. “The driver was seen driving in a dangerous manner through South Auckland, turning off its lights and reaching high speeds on residential streets,” Tetzlaff stated. This reckless driving prompted significant concern for public safety, as the vehicle weaved through neighborhoods, increasing the risk of collisions.

The vehicle re-entered the Southern Motorway (SH20) and continued south, eventually heading towards Te Kauwhata. Police deployed road spikes in an attempt to disable the vehicle, and the effort proved successful, though not without further risk. “Police units were able to spike the vehicle, and it continued for a short distance before losing control and crashing into wire median dividers,” Tetzlaff explained. The crash brought the pursuit to a temporary halt, but the situation remained volatile.

Standoff and Arrest

Following the crash, the driver reportedly “barricaded” himself inside the damaged vehicle. Officers approaching the vehicle observed the man with “live ammunition on his lap,” escalating the danger and necessitating a cautious approach. Police deployed a taser to subdue the man, and a police dog was also involved in the arrest, resulting in the suspect sustaining a dog bite injury.

The man was taken into custody and transported to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition, receiving treatment for the injuries sustained during his arrest. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the presence of two handguns and a “large amount of live ammunition,” according to Tetzlaff. “It’s pleasing that these firearms are now out of circulation in our community,” he added. The recovery of the weapons represents a significant step in ensuring public safety.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The 30-year-old man now faces a series of charges, including failing to stop, reckless driving, receiving stolen property, possession of firearms, and resisting arrest. He is expected to appear in court at a later date. Police are continuing to investigate the initial carjacking incident and have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges being filed. The investigation aims to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the theft and any potential connections to other criminal activity.

As standard procedure, the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has been notified of the incident, given the use of force during the arrest. The IPCA will independently review the police’s actions to ensure they were appropriate and in accordance with established protocols. This independent oversight is a crucial component of maintaining public trust and accountability.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with armed offenders and the importance of swift and decisive action to protect the public. The recovery of firearms and the apprehension of a suspect are positive outcomes, but the investigation remains ongoing to fully address all aspects of the case. Anyone with information related to the initial carjacking is encouraged to contact the Auckland City Police.

Police will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses. The next step will be the man’s court appearance, where further details regarding the charges and potential legal proceedings will be revealed.
