While a British woman named ‘Zoe’ has belatedly garnered attention by posting numerous posts about her daily life in North Korea on her SNS, some are raising suspicions that she was intentionally hired by the North Korean authorities for publicity purposes.

Most of the approximately 750 posts posted on ‘Joy’ Instagram since 2018 are photos and videos taken in North Korea. Joy toured all of Pyongyang’s department stores, beer factories, and restaurants, and there is also a video of the daily lives of North Korean residents.

In a video posted on Joy’s YouTube on February 20, 2021, there is also a video of him freely walking around the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) with a North Korean soldier. The video is currently gaining a lot of attention, with over 1.43 million views.

In particular, Joy took a selfie with a North Korean soldier smiling brightly here. This photo is currently set as Joy’s profile photo. This is in contrast to the stiff facial expressions of North Korean soldiers who are usually exposed to the media.

Regarding this, Joy explained, “Many people say, ‘It’s the first time they’ve seen a North Korean soldier smile.’” “I wanted to exclude political noise and remind them of the ordinary daily lives of people in this country, such as laughing and crying.”

Joy’s SNS account belatedly became a hot topic when it was introduced to Japanese media such as ANN and FNN early this month. However, Japanese media pointed out that there was a high possibility of propaganda regarding North Korean content SNS activities by foreigners, including Joy.

In an article titled ‘What is the purpose of the British woman who promotes North Korea’s daily life on social media?’, ANN said, “Joey denies any relationship with the North Korean authorities, saying, ‘I just want to eliminate prejudice against North Korea,’ but experts say there is a possibility of propaganda.” “It is also pointed out,” the report reported.

Byun Jin-il, editor-in-chief of Japan’s Korean Peninsula magazine ‘Korea Report’, explained to the media, “If a third party, such as a foreign influencer, propagates in this form, credibility increases,” adding, “North Korea basically cannot take pictures of its soldiers at will.” .

FNN also cited an interview with Professor Lee Sang-cheol of Ryukoku University in Japan in a broadcast titled ‘The Mysterious British Woman Promoting North Korea’ and emphasized, “It is impossible without 100% support and cooperation from the North Korean authorities.”

Meanwhile, this is not the first time a foreign woman has uploaded a photo of North Korea on social media. Last January, a beautiful Russian influencer attracted attention by revealing images of herself skiing and receiving a spa treatment at a North Korean ski resort. This woman, like Joy, also wandered around Pyongyang.
