Wall painting on the archbishop’s burial chapel slumbered in secret for 300 years

On Monument Day on Sunday (September 26th) a visit to the Sebastian Cemetery in Salzburg is worthwhile. The restorers have restored Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau’s mausoleum to its original state. A wall painting is considered a sensational find – even if it poses a riddle.

For at least 300 years, the wall painting on the south-east facade of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau’s grave chapel slumbered in secrecy in the St. Sebastian cemetery in the middle of Salzburg’s old town. Hidden under five layers of plaster and paint, the fresco had disappeared from consciousness over the centuries and was forgotten. It was a sensation when the wall painting came to light in 2019 during the restoration of the facade of the mausoleum.
