Wallabies Seek First Eden Park Win Against All Blacks Since 1986

Australia prepares to face New Zealand at Eden Park in a Saturday Bledisloe Cup clash, confronting a 40-year losing streak at the Auckland venue and an All Blacks side eager to rebound from consecutive defeats under coach Dave Rennie.

Wallabies Face 40-Year Eden Park Hoodoo

The Wallabies arrived in Auckland facing what is widely considered the most formidable challenge in rugby union Eden Park against the All Blacks. The New Zealand national team has not lost at the Auckland venue since 1994, a run stretching across 53 Tests, while the Wallabies themselves have not tasted victory at the ground since 1986 when Australia last downed the Kiwis.

Wallabies coach Les Kiss maintained the losing streak has not been a central topic inside his squad while acknowledging the unique atmosphere. Captain Harry Wilson noted the team is drawing confidence from last year’s victory in Johannesburg.

Former All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter recalled his first Bledisloe Cup memory from 2003 when New Zealand reclaimed the trophy after a five-year gap, a period when three of those series were decided in the 80th minute. Former All Blacks scrum-half Justin Marshall voiced concern over New Zealand’s lack of winning turnovers at the breakdown, identifying it as a vulnerability following their series defeat against South Africa.

Ellis Park, that gives this group confidence. Sixty-two years … no one really gave us a shot but we went out, played a good game and got the result. That’s showed the group what we can do on our day, and now (at Eden Park), why not?

All Blacks Shuffle Squad After South Africa Losses

The All Blacks enter the fixture after suffering a 3-1 series defeat to South Africa, a run that included three consecutive losses that left a bitter feeling within the squad. Injuries forced head coach Dave Rennie into a playmaking reshuffle following the end of fly-half Ruben Love’s season due to ankle surgery and a calf complaint for Richie Mo’unga that emerged during the week.

The tour also accounted for captain Ardie Savea. Rennie brought in former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga to assist with defensive duties.

Rennie shifted Damian McKenzie into the starting fly-half role and selected Beauden Barrett at fullback while welcoming back veteran lock Scott Barrett from Taranaki into the starting XV. Rennie addressed the tension surrounding the historic home record during his squad announcement.

We talk about it, and I think you’ve got to acknowledge, no one wants to be part of the first team for a long time to lose at Eden Park or to lose the Bledisloe. I think if we don’t discuss it, some guys will be still mulling over that on game day. So we’ve discussed it, and then we use that as fuel.

Tactical Matchups and Lineups Set for Saturday

Australia enters the contest on a six-match unbeaten run, highlighted by a 42-38 victory over the Springboks in Perth. Wallabies coach Les Kiss opted for a traditional five-forward, three-back bench split, ensuring coverage with a second fly-half on the reserves list who can also cover fullback.

The visiting side features Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii retained on the wing, alongside skipper Harry Wilson leading from the back row. All Blacks captain Codie Taylor emphasized the physical threat posed by the visitors ahead of the 7:10 pm kickoff.

They’re a big side. The way they’re playing, like I said, they’re backing their skillsets, but they’re also, when they get down close to the line, they’re just rolling their sleeves up and getting stuck in. So, we have to match them physically, because if we don’t, we know that it’s going to be a tough night.

The fixture marks the first of two back-to-back Bledisloe Cup encounters, with the return match scheduled at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on October 17, following New Zealand’s 53-Test unbeaten run at the venue since 1994.
