A jury has found 77-year-old Sital Singh Dosanjh guilty of murder in the shooting death of his daughter-in-law, Gurpreet Kaur Dosanjh, stemming from a dispute over her pending divorce. The conviction, handed down Wednesday, brings a measure of justice in a case that shocked the San Jose community.
Details of the South San Jose Shooting
On September 30, 2022, Gurpreet Kaur Dosanjh was fatally shot in the parking lot of a walmart located off Almaden Expressway in South San Jose. The victim, an employee at the store, was on a break when the incident occurred. According to authorities, the shooting was motivated by anger over her plans to divorce the defendant’s son.
Timeline of Events and police Investigation
The tragic sequence of events unfolded rapidly. on the afternoon of the shooting, Dosanjh was reportedly speaking wiht her uncle by phone, expressing fear of her father-in-law and noting his presence in the same parking lot. The call abruptly disconnected as she indicated he was approaching her vehicle.
Approximately five hours later, a co-worker discovered Dosanjh gravely wounded inside her car, suffering from gunshot wounds to her abdomen and shoulder. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her uncle, traveling from the Central Valley – the same route taken by the defendant earlier that day – promptly alerted police to Sital Singh Dosanjh as the likely perpetrator.
Investigators determined the defendant arrived at the parking lot, committed the shooting, and departed within a 15-minute timeframe.Following the incident, police tracked Dosanjh to his home in fresno and arrested him the following morning. A .22-caliber beretta pistol was seized during the arrest.
Justice and Sentencing
“A guilty verdict can never bring back gurpreet or erase her family’s pain, but it does bring a measure of justice that can hopefully help her family find closure,” stated deputy District Attorney Carolyn Malinsky on Friday. “This conviction acknowledges the truth of her murder and recognizes that Gurpreet’s life mattered.”
Dosanjh now faces a minimum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. A sentencing enhancement related to the use of a firearm in the killing could potentially add another 25 years to life to his term. Sentencing is currently scheduled for January.
This case underscores the devastating consequences of domestic disputes and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions.
