The military point 582 | From east to west, up to Lviv. Some date back to the Cold War era and often develop into basements capable of withstanding explosions

The Ukrainians are targeting Russian bases in Crimea, one after the other, even in these hours. Wide use of cruise ships supplied by Great Britain and France, together with the infiltration of saboteurs. The Russians “go to the source”, trying to destroy depots but above all the Ukrainian military factories by exploiting long-range weapons. Damage was caused, after a pause, to the electricity grid resulting in blackouts, a preview of what they will do in the colder months.

In recent days the invaders have intensified their raids, covering the whole of Ukraine, from East to West, including the Lviv area. They have a target bank where the industrial plants involved in the war effort were placed. Some date back to the Cold War era, were built with robust structures, and often develop into underground areas capable of withstanding explosions. The model is that of the Azvostal steelworks in Mariupol transformed into bunkers. Not everything is safe, Moscow has good intelligence, relies on informants, has sufficient vectors for a campaign against strategic infrastructures. And the Ukrainian shield, even if the government claims anti-aircraft successes every day, leaves gaps open. This is demonstrated by the destruction of the Mig 29 on the Kryvyi Rih runway about 70 kilometers from the Russian positions: a Lancet drone “surprised” it exposed in its stand.

Russia can then turn to its allies, states capable of drawing on their reserves of equipment, which on paper are abundant. There has been a lot of talk about North Korea, there is talk about Iran again, after Defense Minister Shoigu’s visit to Tehran. The ayatollahs showed him numerous systems that could be useful in the coming months: they are not expensive, perhaps they are not always sophisticated, but some have already been tested in the field.

To contain the attacks Kiev is thinking of alternative solutions. Contacts are underway to open production/maintenance centers abroad, in order to protect them from strikes. Among the countries considered is Lithuania, which is available to facilitate the operation once some issues have been resolved. Germany made its technicians available while the giant Rheinmetall offered to expand the production chain for ammunition: on German territory and in Ukraine itself, although fears about protection remained. Sweden has funded a logistics assistance program involving Romania, Poland and Slovakia.

The Poles also committed themselves to assisting the Leopard tanks. Mission continues as revealed by a recent episode: the Ukrainians sent back ten tanks just delivered from Berlin because they were not in good condition and needed to be overhauled. Accidents are inevitable in such a massive program combined with unknowns. A few weeks before the elections, Warsaw threatened to block military supplies due to the dispute over wheat imports, a dispute over which negotiations are expected. The political picture risks changing in Slovakia too, if the pro-Russian forces of former Prime Minister Fico, who are clearly opposed to any assistance for Ukraine, were to win.
