(Ottawa) Canada will impose sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, his chief of staff and his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov. The Belarus regime is also targeted for “facilitating this invasion”. In all, 57 people are targeted by these new sanctions.

“It is also announced that Canada strongly supports Russia’s withdrawal from the Swift banking network,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a press conference held late Friday afternoon, the fifth since the start of the week.

President Vladimir Putin reportedly has no assets in Canada, but Prime Minister Trudeau stressed the need for Western countries to maintain a united front and have a coordinated approach to responding to Russian aggression in Ukraine.

The European Union, the United States and Great Britain had announced a little earlier the imposition of sanctions against Vladimir Putin and his Minister of Foreign Affairs.
