To wage war and make up for his massive losses, the Kremlin needs to have a considerable pool of soldiers on hand. To do this, the paramilitary group Wagner, which fights alongside Moscow, has invaded Russian prisons in order to recruit prisoners ready to fight in exchange for their freedom. At the end of May, more than a year after the start of the war, the boss of the Russian militia Evgueni Prigojine evoked for the first time the extent of his losses in Ukraine: 20% of the 50,000 prisoners recruited in Russian penitentiaries would have been killed in action.
