Warner Bros.’ Barbie Movie Nears Billion-Dollar Milestone Worldwide

by time news

Warner Bros.’s movie “Barbie” is on track to reach the billion-dollar mark worldwide this Sunday or Monday, according to inside sources. In the United States, the film is expected to earn around $55 million in its third weekend, crossing the $400 million mark by Thursday, its 15th day of release. This achievement will be faster than previous films such as “The Super Mario Bros Movie” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” which took 18 days to reach that milestone. “Barbie” currently stands at $850 million worldwide.

“Barbie” had an impressive Monday, earning $15 million, making it the best second non-holiday Monday ever for a film. Its Tuesday earnings of $15.25 million also make it the best non-holiday Tuesday for a film that didn’t play during the Christmas or post-Christmas holiday breaks.

Universal’s film “Oppenheimer” is also performing well in its third weekend, projected to earn between $23 million to $26 million. The Christopher Nolan movie has already made $6.98 million on Tuesday, surpassing the final domestic gross of Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” The film’s total domestic earnings currently stand at $188.4 million.

Warner Bros.’ upcoming film “Meg 2: The Trench,” starring Jason Statham, is expected to earn between $20 million to $30 million in its opening weekend. However, its performance may be affected by the success of “Barbie.” The first film in the franchise, released in 2018, opened to $45.4 million and made $145.5 million overall. While the original received lukewarm reviews, the sequel has the potential to earn $90 million internationally, with $50 million of that coming from China.

Paramount/Nickelodeon/Point Grey’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” is also off to a strong start, with previews earning $3.85 million. The film, which is 95% certified fresh, is projected to have a five-day opening of over $30 million. This makes it the best-reviewed animated film of the year so far, alongside “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The previous animated version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released in 2007 earned $24.2 million and had a total domestic gross of $54.1 million.
