Warner Bros./Universal Summer Blockbusters Continue to Dominate Global Box Office

As the summer season nears its end, Warner Bros. and Universal are celebrating the massive success of their blockbuster films. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to become Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie of all time globally on Monday, with an estimated worldwide total of $1.34 billion. It is just $1 million shy of surpassing the current record-holder, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.”

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has reached a global cumulative total of $777.2 million, and is on track to cross $800 million in the near future. The film has performed exceptionally well internationally, surpassing Nolan’s previous hit “The Dark Knight” in several markets. Notably, its opening in Italy brought in an impressive $9.2 million, making it Nolan’s biggest start in the market.

“Oppenheimer” has also achieved significant milestones in other countries, such as becoming Universal’s top title ever in Hungary, surpassing “Minions,” and Warner Bros.’ biggest film ever in Spain. Its performance is outpacing other Nolan films such as “Tenet,” “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk,” and “Inception” at the same point in their release.

In addition to “Oppenheimer,” Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” continues to rake in impressive numbers at the box office. The film added $18.2 million in its sixth week overseas, pushing its total to a staggering $745.5 million. It has surpassed “Joker” to become the third-highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie of all time internationally.

Notably, “Barbie” has also become the biggest Warner Bros. title in 36 markets, including the UK, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Poland. It has claimed the title of the biggest Hollywood film of 2023 across Europe, as well as in Ireland and Argentina.

Other movies making waves at the international box office include Warner Bros.’ “Meg 2: The Trench” and Sony’s “Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story.” “Meg 2” brought in $15.2 million in 77 overseas markets, while “Gran Turismo” earned an additional $11 million in 61 offshore markets.

Overall, Warner Bros. and Universal have dominated the global box office this summer, proving that blockbuster films still have the power to draw audiences worldwide. As the season comes to a close, these studios can celebrate the success of their films and look forward to future releases that are sure to captivate audiences.
