Warning from Seaman: Coal Mining in Tamilnadu’s Cauvery Delta Poses Threat to Farmers and Communities

by time news

Seeman, the chief coordinator of the Naam Tamilar Party, has strongly opposed the Union Government’s plan to construct coal mines in the Cauvery delta, calling it state terrorism against the agriculturists. In a statement, he stated that exploring new coal in Thanjavur District’s Vadaseri is an anti-Tamil move, even after the district was declared a Specially Protected Agricultural Zone. The plan includes pipeline and drilling works in the agricultural lands of Vadaseri, Mahadevapatnam, and Kilikurichi villages in the Thanjavur district, which is protected for agriculture according to the Tamil Nadu Government. Seeman urged the Tamil Nadu Government to include coal in the list of prohibited projects in Schedule 2 of the Protected Agricultural Zones Act, and for the Union Government to withdraw the scheme immediately. He warned that the Naam Tamilar Party would hold large-scale protests under his leadership if the project continues, and they will prevent it from taking place in any way.

CHENNAI: Naam Tamilar Party chief coordinator Seeman has strongly opposed the construction of coal mines in the Cauvery delta as state terrorism against the agriculturists.

Seeman has issued a statement in this regard: The Union Government’s plan to explore new coal in Thanjavur District’s Vadaseri is state terrorism against the agriculturists. Even after the Thanjavur district was declared as a Specially Protected Agricultural Zone, the continuation of this plight shows the anti-Tamil attitude of the Union Government.

In order to explore the possible coal resources near Mannargudi, it is planned to carry out pipeline and drilling works in the agricultural lands of Vadaseri, Mahadevapatnam and Kilikurichi villages in the nearby area.

As the above mentioned villages are in Thanjavur district and Thanjavur district has been declared as Protected Agriculture Zone by Tamil Nadu Government in 2020, we can never accept this research project which affects agriculture.

I urge the Government of Tamil Nadu to ensure that coal is included in the list of prohibited projects in Schedule 2 of the Protected Agricultural Zones Act where “other hydrocarbon” is mentioned.

Also, the Union Government should withdraw this scheme immediately. The Tamil Nadu government should directly oppose the Union government in this scheme instead of making excuses. I warn that if this project is carried forward in violation, we Tamil Party will hold large-scale protests under my leadership and we will prevent this project from taking place in any way. This is what Seaman said.
