Turkish seismology professor Haluk Aydogan said, “Scientists expect an earthquake of more than 7 degrees to occur in Istanbul and the Marmara Sea region, the economic consequences of which will be felt throughout Turkey.”
According to Novosti Agency, and according to calculations by the Istanbul City Council, “in the event of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, at least 90,000 buildings in the city will collapse, and about 4.5 million citizens may need temporary housing.”
According to the agency, “Insurance companies estimate that the damage caused by the earthquake may exceed $325 billion, and one of the branches of the North Anatolian Fault extends into the Sea of Marmara just off the coast of Istanbul.”
In turn, Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Planning Murat Kurum said, “600,000 residential buildings, home to about 2.5 million people, are at risk of collapse in the first minutes of an earthquake that may strike Istanbul.”
According to the newspaper “Dunya”, the Turkish minister said: “Today, we completed the risk analysis in 39 districts in Istanbul, and we confirmed that one-fifth of the total number of homes in this city, about 1.5 million homes, do not meet safety requirements in the event of a possible earthquake.”
He added: “600,000 homes are at risk of collapse in the first minutes, meaning that nearly 2.5 million of our people live in extremely dangerous conditions. We are fully aware of the seriousness of this situation and know that these buildings are in dire need of renovation.”
