“The entire length of the barrier will be reinforced, which the Silesian Institute of Technology and our engineers are working on to make the barrier impassable,” the deputy minister said on TVN24 on Sunday evening.

The structure, built by the previous government, “is largely a temporary solution” and illegal immigrants from Belarus can overcome it, Tomczyk said.

“This barrier has to be effective, and that’s what the Polish government is doing today, and we’re going to put a lot of resources into it,” the official stressed.

The modernization “will cost about 1.5 billion zlotys (350 million euros), and that’s exactly how it should be directed for this barrier to really work,” Tomczyk said.

In 2022, Poland erected a 5.5-meter-high fence with barbed wire on the border with Belarus along its entire length, excluding the section of the border along the Buga River, with a length of 186 kilometers.

The installation of the electronic barrier on the Polish-Belarusian land border was completed in the summer of 2023.

Within the next year, Poland plans to start the construction of an electronic barrier in the water section next to the border with Belarus.
