A female brown sea turtle “Lamoncello”, which was accidentally caught on a fishing hook about six months ago and underwent rehabilitation at the National Sea Turtle Rescue Center of the Nature and Parks Authority, was returned to the sea today (Monday).

“Lamoncello” underwent medical examinations and even a CT diagnosis by Dr. Tzachi Eisenberg. The examinations revealed a hook which was surgically removed under anesthesia. Fishing hooks are one of the common causes of injury among sea turtles in our region.

Now “Lamoncello” is healthy and gained weight (weighs 52 kg!) and is ready to return home to the sea!

“Lamoncello” is released with a satellite transmitter on the armor, through which the Nature and Parks Authority will gather additional knowledge about the movement of brown sea turtles in the Mediterranean, and the functioning of sea turtles rehabilitated from injuries when they return to their natural environment. The turtles regularly broadcast their location and their journeys can be tracked.
