Choi Minhwan of the group FT Island opened up about the reason for his divorce from his ex-wife Yulhee from Laboum.
In an interview with entertainment media outlet Dispatch on the 13th, Choi Min-hwan said, “We faced a crisis in our marriage when Yul-hee found out that I had been to the business.” He also added, “The decisive reason for the divorce was Yul-hee’s attitude towards life, such as frequent running away from home and excessively long naps.” He said.
Choi Min-hwan said that Yul-hee sleeps abnormally a lot, saying, “Sometimes she sleeps 18 to 20 hours a day,” and, “If I mentioned that, she got angry and left the house.” Minhwan Choi said that Yulhee left home more than 20 times over 5 years.
Choi Min-hwan claimed that while he was serving as a full-time reserve soldier from February 2020 to September 2021, a teacher came to take care of the child, and he himself took care of the child after work. In addition, Choi Min-hwan’s mother said that in addition to raising him, he also did household chores such as preparing dinner.
In August 2021, when Choi Min-hwan pointed out that Yul-hee was napping too much, Yul-hee cursed in front of her mother-in-law and stayed at her parents’ house for 10 days with her first child. In August 2023, Yulhee ran away from home for about a week. Choi Min-hwan claimed, “I was drunk and promised that I would never leave the house again, but a few days later, Yul-hee went out at night and came back the next morning.”
As the same pattern repeated, Minhwan Choi said he decided to divorce. Choi Min-hwan and Yul-hee completed their divorce by agreement in December 2023. At that time, they agreed not to exchange money with each other regarding alimony and property division. Custody and parental rights went to Choi Min-hwan.
After the divorce, Yulhee posted a picture of herself enjoying single life on Instagram, and the public who saw this criticized her for being a ‘mother who abandoned her child.’ In response, Yulhee revealed in October last year that Choi Minhwan sexually harassed her in front of her parents-in-law and entered entertainment establishments while she was married.
Regarding this, Choi Min-hwan said, “When we were discussing divorce, that issue (entering the establishment) did not even come up. “It was because they were unable to narrow the gap in their lifestyles, but they suddenly cited the business problem as the cause of the breakup and demanded alimony,” he claimed.
Yulhee submitted an application for mediation, including change of parental rights and caregivers, to the Seoul Family Court in November last year. They also requested 100 million won in alimony, 1 billion won in property division, and child support for the children (5 million won per month until May 17, 2037, and 3 million won per month until February 10, 2039).
Choi Min-hwan said, “Even after the divorce, I was considerate of Yul-hee. “I wonder if such an extreme method was a choice for the children,” he said. “I will admit my mistake. But I want to correct the lies,” he said.
Yulhee has not provided a statement regarding this.
