Japan and the United States intend to spend $3 billion to develop a new missile to intercept hypersonic weapons.

The Pentagon noted, “The missile is scheduled to be designed by the mid-2030s, and this will be the second joint development of the two countries in the field of missiles after the creation of the SM-3 Block 2 missile, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles.”

It is noteworthy that the leaders of the two countries had agreed on joint military development in August of last year.

The new missile will have to intercept the hypersonic warhead in the air, when it separates after launch. In order to improve detection and tracking capabilities, the United States is creating a surveillance system using a group of small, high-precision satellites.

The new missile will be deployed on US warships and Japanese Navy destroyers equipped with the Aegis anti-missile system.
