/ The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced on Saturday that the State Department has approved the possible sale of F-16 fighter jets and related equipment to Turkey for $23 billion.

The Pentagon said in a statement: “The Department of State has decided to approve a possible foreign military sale to Turkey of F-16 aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $23 billion.”

On the other hand, the Pentagon announced that the US State Department also approved the possible sale of F-35 aircraft to Greece for approximately $8.6 billion.

Earlier on Saturday, the Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, announced the approval of the sale of F-16 fighter jets from the United States to Turkey, after Ankara approved Sweden’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Last Thursday, the White House sent a letter to members of the US Congress urging them to approve the sale of F-16 aircraft and modernization equipment to Turkey worth $20 billion.

It is noteworthy that the majority of the members of the Turkish Parliament approved, yesterday, Tuesday, a draft law approving the protocol for Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Sweden, as a member of the European Union, agreed during negotiations with the Turkish President that in exchange for ratifying its application to join NATO, it would assist in the process of Turkey’s accession to the European Union.
