/ The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced on Saturday that the State Department had approved the possible sale of F-16 fighter jets and related equipment to Turkey for $23 billion.

The Pentagon said in a statement: “The State Department decided to approve a potential foreign military sale to Turkey for F-16 aircraft and related equipment at an estimated cost of $23 billion.”

On the other hand, the Pentagon announced that the US State Department also approved the possible sale of F-35 aircraft to Greece for about $8.6 billion.

Earlier, on Saturday, the Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, announced the approval of the sale of F-16 fighter jets from the United States to Turkey, after Ankara approved Sweden’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Last Thursday, the White House sent a letter to members of the US Congress urging them to approve the sale of a deal of F-16 aircraft and modernization equipment to Turkey worth $20 billion.

It is noteworthy that the majority of members of the Turkish Parliament approved, yesterday, Tuesday, a draft law approving the protocol for Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Sweden, as a member of the European Union, agreed during negotiations with the Turkish President that, in exchange for ratifying its application to join NATO, it would assist in Turkey’s accession process to the European Union.
