Washington calls for active participation in UN mission initiative

The US Embassy in Libya called on all parties concerned with the crisis at the Central Bank of Libya to “actively participate in the initiative launched by the UN mission.”

The embassy stressed that “peaceful dialogue is the only way to resolve existing differences and turn the page on this crisis that threatens the country’s economic and financial stability.”

“The initiative by the United Nations Support Mission in #Libya to host talks between key Libyan stakeholders offers a path forward to resolve the crisis over the Central Bank of Libya, and the U.S. Embassy in Libya urges all parties to seize this opportunity,” the embassy said in a statement. “Tensions have escalated in recent days, undermining confidence in Libya’s economic and financial stability among Libyan citizens and the international community, and raising the prospect of further destructive confrontations. Reports of arbitrary arrests and intimidation of Central Bank employees are particularly troubling—those responsible must be held accountable.”

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya had previously expressed its “deep regret over the situation in Libya as a result of unilateral decisions.”

She considered that “insisting on these decisions or continuing to take more of them will have a high cost for the Libyan people, and will expose the country to the risk of financial and economic collapse.”
