The United States supports resolving the issue of international recognition of the Palestinian state only through direct negotiations with interested parties, and not through UN structures. This was stated by the head of the press service of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
Asked by reporters whether Washington was going to again veto Palestine’s application for full UN membership, Miller said he was not ready to speculate on what decision would be made. “But we have always made it clear that we believe, despite the support [идеи] creation of an independent Palestinian state <...>“that this (international recognition of Palestine – TASS note) should happen through direct negotiations between the parties – this is what we are now seeking – and not through the United Nations,” he explained.
On April 3, Palestine’s permanent observer to the UN, Riyad Mansour, reported that Malta, which chairs the UN Security Council (SC), began the process of considering Palestine’s application for admission to the world organization in April. In 2011, a similar application from the Palestinian side was rejected.
Palestine now has a permanent observer at the UN. Countries with this status can attend most meetings and have access to almost all relevant documentation, but do not have voting rights. Besides Palestine, only the Holy See (Vatican City) has permanent observer status at the UN.
