The Washington Institute for Near East Policy has warned in a new report of Russia’s growing role in the region, accusing Moscow of arming anti-American proxies and undermining stability in the Middle East.

The report stated that Russia “exploits the weakness of the United States and employs a strategy of limited action to empower hostile forces in the region, starting from the Houthis in Yemen to Haftar in Libya.”

The report indicated that Western powers “did little to deter” Moscow from turning Libya into a proxy battlefield between Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, France and Egypt, noting that Russia “has always been closer to Haftar” in its relations with the Libyan parties.

The report stated that Moscow delivered thousands of tons of military equipment from Syria to the port of Tobruk, expanding its influence in the region, stressing its quest to obtain “the rights to the deep-water port in Tobruk,” which could be turned into a base for nuclear attack submarines.

The report stressed that Russia seeks to achieve its goals in the Middle East by empowering its agents, which allows it to undermine stability in the region and distract the United States from its strategic goals.

The report called on the United States to move forcefully with its allies to confront this threat, stressing the need to create strong regional alliances to confront Moscow.
