Janet Yellen, US Treasury Secretary, announced that the country will contribute $667 million to a fund aimed at improving pandemic preparedness capabilities.

During an event in Rio de Janeiro, ahead of a meeting of G20 finance ministers, he said that US President Joe Biden and the secretary are “convinced that a well-funded Pandemic Fund will allow us to Prevent, prepare and respond more effectively to future pandemics.”

The amount Yellen indicated would represent about a third of the $2 billion fundraising goal set by the World Bank in 2022 with the support of the G20 countries.

Despite the announcement, the financing of the pandemic prevention fund until 2026 still depends on the approval of Congress, as well as of the “availability” of the amount, which is uncertain less than four months before the country’s presidential elections.

Finally, the department urged previously committed donors to double their initial contributions, as well as requesting support from new partners, including: governments, the private sector, philanthropists and civil society.
