Washington is considering the possibility of creating a new land corridor from Central Asian countries to world markets through the territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan, bypassing Russia and China.

Day.Az reports this, citing a speech by Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Central Asian countries are “incredibly rich,” the official said, but their only options for accessing global markets currently lie through Russia or China. If the U.S. could open a route through Armenia or Azerbaijan, Washington would have access to global markets and be far less dependent on Moscow and Beijing.

Earlier, the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elchin Amirbekov, speaking at an online seminar at the Hudson Institute in Washington, said that the opening of the Zangezur Corridor will serve as a measure to strengthen trust between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
