At least three people were killed Wednesday afternoon when a house exploded in the southern Indiana city of Evansville, authorities said. David Anson, Vanderburgh County’s chief deputy coroner, told The Associated Press that the identities of the people who died will not be released pending notification of next of kin.

Evansville Fire Chief Mike Connelly said a total of 39 homes were damaged in the explosion that occurred around 1 p.m. Wednesday. At least 11 of the 39 damaged homes are “uninhabitable,” he said.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been released, but the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the explosion, “Debris was scattered over 30 meters, including construction materials such as wood panels, glass and insulation materials, Connelly said.

This was the second explosion in this area, on June 27, 2017, two people were killed in the area and three others were injured by a strong explosion of a house, similar to the last case.
