A new video ad campaign by Deutsche Telekom has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the potential dangers of oversharing personal information about children. Dr. Rebecca Portnoff, director of data science at Thorn, a nonprofit organization fighting against child sexual abuse online, explains that once an image is shared online, it becomes challenging to control its distribution.

The campaign highlights various potential dangers associated with oversharing children’s data, such as online bullying, identity theft, and the creation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Portnoff points out that malicious individuals can manipulate content to sexualize images and videos of children, using AI technology and publicly available data to their advantage.

AI algorithms can automatically identify and collect images of children, enabling the creation of profiles used for advertising or even pornographic content. Predators can exploit this technology to create realistic material or fabricate entirely new material.

Nonetheless, efforts are being made to combat child exploitation online. Organizations like Thorn have developed machine learning algorithms to detect and remove CSAM. They aim to protect children from the harmful consequences of a digital life.

To strike a balance between connecting with friends and safeguarding their children’s privacy, experts recommend that parents share photos and content only in private albums with trusted family and friends, rather than publicly. They also encourage parents to educate their children about online safety, including the importance of privacy and the permanence of online content.
