During the event, Zamor promised to “re-occupy” France after decades of deterioration, fight immigration and lower taxes when 10,000-15,000 of his supporters waved state flags.

“French Donald Trump”

As you may recall, the Jewish journalist Arik Zamor announced last month that he would run in the French presidential election on April 10. In his statement, he said he was running to challenge incumbent President Emanuel Macron and to “rehabilitate and save the country.”

The 63-year-old Zamor is identified with the country’s far right, and has earned the nickname “French Donald Trump” due to his sharp remarks. Among other things, Zamor promoted many initiatives against Muslims and immigrants, most notably a bill that would have banned a child born in the country from being named non-French. In the past he has said that “it is either Islam or France”, and last month a criminal trial was opened against him after he said at a rally that “immigrant children are thieves, rapists and murderers”.

Although he himself is a Jew, Zamor also managed to get involved with the Jewish community in the country after introducing himself as the “protector of French Christian culture.” In recent years he has also provided a host of controversial statements that angered the country’s Jews, including questioning the innocence of Officer Dreyfus and even defending the actions of the Nazi regime stationed in France during World War II. Many Jews have argued that his criticism of the loyalty of French Jews to the state and its values encourages anti-Semitism among the Muslim public.

Zamor is expected to compete against Marin Le Pen for the votes of far-right supporters in France, and in recent weeks there have been a number of polls that have predicted his victory in this battle. However, most polls now estimate that Macron and Le Pen will be the candidates to run in the decisive second round of the election, with no candidate expected to get over 50 per cent of the vote to secure victory in the first round.
