Watch: Tsunami in Tonga following volcanic eruption

An underground volcano erupted in the Pacific Ocean near Tonga, causing a severe tsunami that hit the country’s largest island, Tongtapa. Watch the eruption:

High waves reportedly hit the capital Nakolufa, causing flooding on roads and flooding homes.

Tonga King, Tofu VI, was evacuated from his palace, and a convoy of police and soldiers reportedly evacuated him to another residence.

Following the events, a tsunami warning was issued on the northern island of New Zealand and on the west coast of the United States from California in the south to Alaska in the north, and also in part of Canada.

Satellite images from the area indicate ash clouds and shock waves that hit the eruption area.
