A study found that watching TV for long periods of time can significantly increase the risk of dementia.

On the 17th (local time), the British Daily Mail reported on the correlation between TV viewing time and dementia, citing the results of a large-scale study by the British Biobank Project.

The Biobank project researchers analyzed data from 407,000 participants aged 37 to 73 and followed them for 13 years. At the start of the study, none of the participants had any brain disease and reported watching TV for an average of 2.7 hours per day.

After 13 years of follow-up, 5,227 people were diagnosed with dementia, 6,822 people suffered a stroke, and 2,308 people were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

What’s notable is that the more time you watch TV, the higher your risk of developing brain disease.

The group that watched TV for 3 to 5 hours a day had a 15% higher risk of developing dementia compared to the group that watched TV for less than 1 hour.

The group that watched TV for more than 5 hours had a 44% higher risk of dementia. The risk of stroke increased by 12%, and the risk of Parkinson’s disease increased by 28%.

The researchers pointed out that “TV viewing time is closely related to an increased risk of various brain-related diseases.”

Similar results were confirmed in a 12-year follow-up observation by NAS, an organization of American scientists.

The study found that people who watched TV for more than four hours a day had a 24% increased risk of developing dementia.

A research team from Tianjin Medical University in China discovered that watching TV for more than five hours reduces gray matter and shrinks the memory center. All of this is thought to be related to brain diseases such as dementia.
