(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 21 – Keeping well hydrated is essential for health. It is even more so in summer, since in the heat we tend to sweat more and lose more fluids.
Using water bottles, instead of disposable bottles, can be an ecological and convenient choice. However, to ensure the safety, hygiene and quality of water it is necessary to adopt some precautions, reminds the National Center for Water Safety (CeNSiA) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
Especially in summer, with high temperatures, it is good to change the water often: at least every 4-5 hours. Never fill the water bottle to use it for more than 24 hours, the ISS reminds. Before filling it, it is good to rinse the water bottle with two or three washes. If you are doing it at home, the residual water and that of the washes can be used for the garden or for domestic hygiene.
Always keep in mind that by drinking, we ourselves can contaminate the water contained in the bottle. Therefore, special attention must be paid to promiscuous use.
It is also good to remember not to leave the water bottle under the sun or at high temperatures. When you are at the beach, for example, it is advisable to keep it inside a thermal bag or under the umbrella.
If possible, it is preferable to use a thermal bottle, which is designed to keep water colder for longer.
Particular attention must be paid to the hygiene of the water bottle. It must be washed once a day, using a plastic brush and normal dish detergent and rinsed with fresh running water. If there are no specific contraindications, it is preferable to wash the water bottle in the dishwasher. Do not underestimate the cleaning of caps and seals: they are the parts most in contact with the neck of the water bottle where we rest our lips during use. Therefore, a lack of or poor cleaning of these accessories could contaminate a perfectly clean water bottle and make its contents unhygienic. It is therefore necessary to wash them periodically (never more than a week) preferably in the dishwasher or with normal dish detergent and rinse them with fresh running water.
Finally, to remove odors that can form over time, just pour hot water and a teaspoon of bicarbonate into the bottle; close it, shake it, and let it rest for a few hours (better overnight); then empty it and rinse it with fresh running water. (ANSA).
