18 runaway water buffalo have wreaked havoc on a couple’s garden and pool in the UK. The couple discovered the animals, each weighing 600 kilograms, in the morning. “When my wife was about to make breakfast tea and looked out the window, she saw eight buffalo in the pool,” Andy Smith, from Essex, east England, told the Guardian newspaper (Saturday).

“She dialed 911 – but the fire department said they didn’t take prank calls. It took a lot of persuasion to get them to take us seriously.” The fire brigade came later. Above all, the farmer, from whom the animals had escaped because of a broken electric fence, finally helped to capture them – unharmed.

Images from surveillance cameras cleared up the incident. Accordingly, the buffalo wandered into the garden early in the morning. One stepped on the pool cover and fell into the water, causing seven other animals to jump in. The clear water turned into a muddy broth. “That pool was our retirement luxury,” Smith said. “It was earned with much sweat and toil, but after the buffalo swam in it it licked and was useless.”

Good news for the couple: The damage caused by the incident last July in the garden and pool of around 25,000 pounds (28,788.58 euros) has now – with a little delay – been taken over by an insurer.
