Water, housing, immigration… Élisabeth Borne will travel to Mayotte on December 8 to address these subjects in the poorest department in France, faced with a serious drought coupled with migratory pressure from neighboring Comoros.

The Prime Minister will reaffirm in the 101st French department “the government’s commitment, particularly on the issues of water supply and the fight against unsanitary housing”, said Matignon. “Several sequences will also be devoted to security on the island and the fight against illegal immigration,” the same source added. The trip takes place a few days before the start of the examination on December 11, in the hemicycle of the National Assembly, of the very sensitive bill on immigration.

Explosive security situation

The head of government will also meet local elected officials and “exchange with residents about their daily lives and the future of the island”, according to Matignon. Last week, the government expanded the distribution of free bottled water to the entire population of Mayotte (around 310,000 inhabitants), facing a serious drought. Until now it was reserved for the 60,000 inhabitants considered to be the most vulnerable.

The social and security situation is explosive on the small archipelago in the Indian Ocean, the poorest department in France, currently deprived of running water more than two days out of three. The territory, which is experiencing demographic growth of 4% per year, is also under pressure from illegal immigration, particularly from the neighboring Comoros.

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, went to Mayotte at the end of June to defend Wuambushu (“resumption” in Mahorese), a contested operation to fight crime, illegal immigration and unsanitary housing. On Tuesday, the minister announced the sending of additional reinforcements after several clashes between villages on the island.
