Kozhikode: The Women in Cinema Collective is holding a meeting with the Women’s Commission demanding the release of the Hema Commission report. The government has appointed the Hema Commission to study the problems of women in the film industry in the wake of the attack on the actress. Although the commission has submitted its report, the government has not yet implemented any of the recommendations in the report. To a question as to why the Hema Commission report was not implemented, the government replied that it was examining in detail the implementation of the report.

Director Anjali Menon, singer Sainora, screenwriter Didi Damodaran and actress Parvathy are among those meeting the Women’s Commission. The WCC has come out with a strong stance in the wake of director Balachandra Kumar’s latest revelations on the attack on the actress.

The government spent over Rs 1 crore on the Hema Commission. The cost of the commission from 2017 to 2020 is Rs.10655000. This is stated in the RTI document. According to the documents, Justice Hema received Rs 10322254 ten times.

The government set up a commission to study the working conditions of women in the film industry after the WCC, a women’s group in the film industry, met the Chief Minister in person after the incident in which the actress was attacked. In addition to Justice Hema, the commission comprising Vatsalakumari and actress Sharda submitted its report to the government in 2019.

The commission also recorded the statements of about 60 women in the film industry. But protests, including by the WCC, are intensifying against the government’s unwillingness to take further action on the multi-crore commission report.
