Jean-Luc Mélenchon is categorical: “We all have to do it” to welcome the thousands of migrants who arrived this week on the Italian island of Lampedusa, said this Sunday on BFMTV the leader of La France insoumise.

France is “capable of welcoming 250 people from Lampedusa and we are asking the others [pays d’Europe] to do the same (…) Most countries in Europe need immigration,” declared the unsuccessful presidential candidate.

“I would start with a wave of massive regularization”

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen presented this Sunday in Lampedusa an emergency plan to help Italy manage the record arrival of migrants on its territory. It is intended to manage the current situation, to better distribute applicants between European countries and to prevent the repetition of episodes of mass arrivals which put significant strain on the logistical and administrative capacities of the peninsula.

“If I came to govern, I would start with a wave of massive regularization” in France, assured Jean-Luc Mélenchon, criticizing the government’s future immigration bill which provides for the regularization of certain workers, only in professions in tension. The majority of deputies from the left-wing Nupes alliance “will not vote” for this “absurd” text, assured the tribune.
