The 25th Jeonju International Film Festival began its 10-day journey with an opening ceremony at the Moak Hall of the Korea Sound Culture Center at 7:30 pm on the 1st.
This year’s 25th Jeonju International Film Festival opened with the opening declaration of Jeonju Mayor Woo Beom-ki, Chairman of the Jeonju International Film Festival Organizing Committee.
Organizing Committee Chairman Woo Beom-ki said, “This year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, like last year, will be held under the slogan ‘We always cross the line.’” He added, “I think there are many lines that must be crossed to regain the pride of Jeonju that has been around for 1,000 years. In that sense, ‘we always cross the line.’ “I think ‘always cross the line’ is a proper slogan that symbolizes the Jeonju International Film Festival,” he said.
He then shouted, “I hope that everyone who is here today will not be afraid and will boldly cross the line and join us so that Jeonju is not left behind by any city in crossing the line,” and “I declare the opening of the 25th Jeonju International Film Festival.”
On this day, the opening ceremony of the 25th Jeonju International Film Festival was hosted by actors Gong Seung-yeon and Lee Hee-jun. At the red carpet event held prior to the opening ceremony, more than 160 invited guests from home and abroad, including actors Yoo Ji-tae, Jin Goo, Yu-mi Lee, and Byun Woo-seok, entered and heightened the festival atmosphere.
At the opening ceremony, a collaboration performance by pianist Oh Eun-ha and percussion theater member Aqui was held to celebrate the opening.
Next, director Sho Miyake’s ‘All at Dawn’, the opening film of this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, was screened.
‘All at Dawn’ is a work based on the novel of the same name by Japanese author Maiko Seo. The friendship and solidarity between Fujisawa, who suffers from PMS (premenstrual syndrome), and Yamazoe, who has panic disorder, is beautifully portrayed. Director Miyake Sho visited Jeonju as the director of the opening film for the first time in five years, following his visit to the Jeonju International Film Festival in 2019 with the film ‘Your Bird Can Sing’.
Director Miyake Sho said at the opening press conference this afternoon, “I feel that the Jeonju International Film Festival is a festival where many people who like movies gather,” and “I think it is a festival with an air and atmosphere that focuses on movies and respects movies, and I hope to have this atmosphere at this year’s film festival as well.” “I want to feel it,” he said.
Director Miyake Sho continued, “I was very attracted to seeing the two main characters in the original novel think about each other’s symptoms and situations in various ways without having stereotypes or prejudices,” he said. There are many people who cannot live according to their hearts or thoughts. “I hope that the movie will provide an opportunity to think about these people’s problems from a variety of perspectives,” he explained.
This year’s Jeonju International Film Festival recorded the largest number of entries ever in both the Korean and International Competition categories. There are 232 films screened in 43 countries. There are 102 domestic works (52 full-lengths, 50 shorts) and 130 foreign works (110 full-lengths, 20 shorts).
Director Heo Jin-ho of the movie ‘One Gone Spring Day’ participated as this year’s programmer and had time to share works such as ‘Paris Texas’ and ‘Tokyo Story’ with the audience.
In addition, world-famous director Tsai Ming-liang plans to visit Jeonju with the 10th film of the ‘Hangja Series’ to further enrich the film festival.
At the film festival, you can see a special screening of ‘Inside Out 2’, which will be released this year. Continuing from last year, the Jeonju International Film Festival is collaborating with Walt Disney Company Korea to operate a Disney-Pixar theme zone.
Executive Chairman Min Seong-wook said, “Every year, the Jeonju International Film Festival collects works that discuss various topics under the values of independence and alternatives and presents them to the audience.” He added, “The works you will see at this film festival contain various aspects and emotions of our lives. “I think it will be an opportunity to understand and communicate with different cultures and ideas,” he said.
Executive Chairman Jeong Jun-ho also said, “The Jeonju International Film Festival was able to celebrate its 25th anniversary because of all the people who consistently love and support independent films, alternative films, and art films.” He added, “I risked my life on one independent film, and I made another film. Life is captured in one movie, and a lot of conversation is told in one movie. “Please support the creators who have the passion to make movies even in difficult situations,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the 25th Jeonju International Film Festival will be held in the Jeonju Film Street area for 10 days from this day to the 10th.
