“We are ashamed too”. That motto and the drawing of a dog in the background are what’s there Betanzo reuse in a new campaign to raise dog owners’ awareness of their obligations. It is an initiative that Betanzos already carried out a few years ago and which now “we believe it is necessary to repeat, using the same image that we had and that other municipalities asked of us”, explains the Servizos councilor, Andrés Hermida, who believes that “Even if the vast majority of dog owners respect their obligations when, for example, picking up excrement, it is true that others continue not to do so, with the damage this entails.
Hermida explained itand in recent years no sanctions have been imposed by the Local Police, which simply warned pet owners, but “after this new campaign, we will act accordingly if the rules are broken”. The councilor specified, in conjunction with the first day of the campaign, that “in some areas there are complaints from the neighbourhoods, on which we will give greater emphasis”. In addition to putting up posters in these places, the booklets will be distributed at different times of the day by the Civil Protection and will also be distributed in facilities related to animal care such as veterinary clinics or shops that sell pet food.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Councilor Andrés Hermida on Dog Ownership Responsibilities in Betanzos
Time.news Editor: Good morning, Mr. Hermida, and thank you for joining us today. Betanzos is launching a new campaign aimed at dog owners. Could you tell us more about this initiative and what motivated its revival?
Andrés Hermida: Good morning! Thank you for having me. Yes, our new campaign, titled “We are ashamed too,” aims to remind dog owners of their responsibilities, especially regarding cleaning up after their pets. We ran a similar initiative a few years ago, and seeing that there are still violators, we felt it was necessary to reinstate it. The campaign features a relatable drawing of a dog to grab attention and resonate with pet owners.
Time.news Editor: It seems that education is a crucial part of this campaign. How effective do you believe this approach will be in changing behavior among dog owners in Betanzos?
Andrés Hermida: Education is indeed key. While most dog owners comply, there remains a small percentage who neglect their responsibilities. Our goal is to create awareness not only about the rules but also about the impact their actions have on the community. The previous campaign saw improvements, and we hope this renewed effort will encourage even more owners to be responsible.
Time.news Editor: You mentioned that no fines had been imposed in recent years, with the Local Police primarily issuing warnings. Will there be any changes in how regulations are enforced following this campaign?
Andrés Hermida: Absolutely. While we believe in educating our residents, it’s also important to uphold the law. After this awareness campaign, we plan to implement fines of up to 300 euros for violations. It’s about striking a balance: we want to give owners a chance to comply, but we must also hold those who disregard the rules accountable.
Time.news Editor: That’s a significant change. What feedback have you received from the community regarding both the upcoming campaign and the new fines?
Andrés Hermida: The reactions have been mixed. Many community members support the initiative, understanding the need for shared responsibility. However, there are others concerned about the fines. It is important for us to communicate that the intention is not to penalize but to ensure a clean and safe environment for all. We hope to find common ground through dialogue.
Time.news Editor: It sounds like you are approaching this challenge thoughtfully. As this campaign unfolds, what steps will you take to monitor its effectiveness and ensure that the message resonates with dog owners?
Andrés Hermida: We will closely monitor compliance rates and gather feedback from residents. We’ll be engaging with community groups and gathering input through surveys. Additionally, we will keep an eye on how many warnings versus fines are issued over the next few months to assess whether the campaign is achieving its goals.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Mr. Hermida, for your insights. It appears Betanzos is taking an important step towards creating a more responsible dog ownership culture. We look forward to hearing how the campaign progresses!
Andrés Hermida: Thank you! We’re hopeful that with the community’s support, we can make a positive change for everyone in Betanzos.
