The Dutch press described Ajax’s fall from the Cup as the country’s “biggest football scandal” and the management seems to share the same thought. This Friday morning, the club sent emails to fans announcing the refund of tickets and payment of associated expenses, including travel to the modest USV Hercules’ ground.
“Due to the failure of our team, you have undoubtedly had a painful experience. We share this pain and are deeply ashamed”, can be read in the note sent by the management to the fans who went to the Stadion Galgenwaard.
In a match with epic contours, not least because the triumph came in stoppage time, Ajax lost at Hercules, in the fourth tier, by 3-2. Never, in its more than 100 years of history, had the Dutch team lost in the Dutch Cup against an amateur team.
