We are expecting the launch of a joint checkpoint between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

As Day.Az reports on Thursday with reference to Trend, this was said by the Chairman of the Partnership for Transport and Logistics in Central Asia, Larisa Kislyakova, speaking at a panel discussion on the topic “Financing more environmentally friendly value chains in the CAREC region (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program ) within the framework of the ADB annual meeting in Tbilisi.

Speaking about the main work to improve the efficiency of the Middle Corridor, Kislyakova noted that it is necessary to increase the number of cars and modernize the ferries so that they can accommodate more cars.

“Since the Caspian Sea is becoming shallower, it is necessary to modernize, make completely new ferries that will be more spacious and suitable for this solution,” she said.

Kislyakova noted that if a transit committee and a transit council for all countries that will be involved in this corridor are created, it will be possible to simplify transit and customs procedures.

“Plus, the permitting system for transit along this corridor needs to be abolished. Because during the season of export of products, permitting documents increase in price very much. If they cost between 50-100 dollars, at the time of export of products the price reaches 3-4 thousand dollars once a year, and there were sometimes not enough of them. Therefore, resolving these issues will greatly help to develop and intensify movement along this corridor,” she said.

Kislyakova also drew attention to infrastructure issues.

“This is more relevant to the Central Asian countries. Because there are no problems with transit through Georgia and Azerbaijan. And, of course, we are now expecting from Azerbaijan and Georgia the early launch of a joint checkpoint, which will be the only contender in our countries for joint inspection of cargo. This is also very important, because now cargo is inspected from both sides and this takes a lot of time.

And now Tajikistan and Uzbekistan intend to conduct a joint inspection at one of the checkpoints. That is, such technological innovations for checkpoints will play a decisive role in accelerating movement along this corridor,” she said.
