An anonymous call led to the Searching Mothers of Sonora to a clandestine crematorium in Nogales, Sonora.

SEARCH FOR MISSING PERSONS

In Quintana Roo, 986 missing and unlocated people were reported in the last five years, 41 percent of the cases in the municipality of Benito Juárez. Given this situation, the Quintana Roo Commission for the Search for Persons, In collaboration with groups of Mothers Searching, genetic samples will be collected to create a catalogue of the families of missing persons.

This effort seeks to compare the samples with the remains found by the State Attorney General’s Office. (FGE) for easy identification.

The initiative responds to a request from the group Truth, Memory and Justice, and will be carried out by specialized personnel from the National Commission for the Search for Persons in Mexico City.

Sampling will be confidential and funded by the National Commission for the Search for Persons, This will avoid costs for participating families. It is estimated that the collection of these will begin at the end of September, after the coordination meetings between the Search Commission and the collectives.

López Urbina stressed the importance of the collaboration of family members in this process.

“It is vital that all relatives of missing persons participate in the taking of genetic samples. This action not only helps to identify remains, but is also a fundamental step in the search for justice and reparation for the affected families,” he said.
