We could see iPhone 15 Ultra instead of Pro Max

Apple could introduce a new naming system at the launch of the iPhone 15 next year, replacing the current “Pro Max” brand with “Ultra”. This is according to the famous Apple journalist tracker Mark Gormanwho also expects the iPhone 15 to come with some “big changes,” including USB-C.

The Pro Max name debuted with the iPhone 11 in 2019, and adding the Ultra brand to the iPhone lineup wouldn’t be surprising. Apple actually launched the new Apple Watch Ultra earlier this month, and added the name to its M1 Ultra processor. Apple also made a slight change to its naming system with the iPhone 14, bringing back the “Plus” name that the company had previously dispensed with.

The iPhone is not yet 14 months old, but other rumors about the iPhone 15 are already starting to circulate. Supply chain analyst Ross Young expects the new Dynamic Island notch to become standard on all iPhone 15 models — not just the Pro and Pro Max (or Ultra) models. The iPhone 15 is also rumored to come with USB-C instead of Apple’s own Lightning port. Gorman says the company had already begun testing the new feature before the European Union implemented a law requiring all new phones to have USB-C ports by the fall of 2024.

The majority support Apple’s replacement of the Pro Max brand with Ultra – the Ultra name is lighter and better than the long Pro Max. I wonder if Apple is getting rid of the Max branding entirely, or if they plan to reserve the name that falls between the Pro and Ultra levels. Apple also has AirPods Max, and it will be interesting to see if Apple makes any name changes whenever the second generation comes along.

With the iPhone 14 launch coming to a close, Apple is gearing up to round out the year with a slew of new Macs, including the updated M2 and M2 Pro Mac Minis, the M2 Pro, the M2 Max 14-inch, 16-inch MacBook Pro, the M2 11-inch, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
