“We don’t rule it out at all”

The PNV seems uncomfortable with the current political context: it avoids agreeing with the PP so as not to be splashed by Vox even though it is also seeing how agreeing with the PSOE wears it out. In this scenario, Aitor Esteban appeared before the media this Thursday (something unusual) and wanted to do so to show his discomfort with the popular people because he considers that Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s speech in the investiture debate was “clumsy” due to the tone. which he used against the PNV and has also tried to send a warning to the PSOE to put pressure on the negotiations: “We do not rule out an electoral repetition at all.”

Esteban already expressed his indignation yesterday with Feijóo because he reproached the PNV for its loyalty to the PSOE and its approach to the Bildu path. And this Thursday he did it again with a strong message. The spokesman for the Basque nationalists considered it “ugly and contemptuous” that Feijóo responded to PNV and Bildu jointly instead of doing so separately, since this gesture can be interpreted as an attempt by the PP to equate both formations. Feijóo clarified that in no case was that his intention and showed his respect for the PNV, but it was not enough. “He wanted to make a kind of hodgepodge to make his provocative speech, and it seemed to me, honestly, to be an absolute lack of respect. These things are also taken into account,” said Esteban.

In the opinion of the PNV spokesperson, Feijóo made a mistake by “provoking and looking for a fight” since “instead of choosing to plant, knowing what the yard is like, he opted for a scorched earth speech.” “As a speech, it was the anti-investiture speech,” he pointed out, in an obvious sign that the PNV has come out badly from the investiture debate at a delicate moment for the party because it is losing electoral support (as has been reflected in the general elections and the municipal ones) and that may end up having an impact on the next regional ones. In fact, both parties are fighting for a moderate pool of voters.

In any case, despite the discomfort with the PP, things with the PSOE are not progressing much either. In fact, Esteban has acknowledged that he has spoken “very little” with the socialists and, therefore, raises the ghosts of an electoral repetition. The truth is that Basque nationalists are also aware that right now Junts are the ones setting the pace. “There is one that until now has not entered into this, that has been in confrontation for years, with some of its members imprisoned and unhealed wounds. That is the most difficult negotiation, and it will have to be clarified,” he stated.
