The export of barley has doubled

The wheat produced in Bulgaria is almost 3% more compared to last year. The production is for a little over 6.7 million tons. This is due to an increased average yield per hectare, the Ministry of Agriculture reported after the harvest campaign.

According to operational data, by mid-August, the harvest of the main autumn crops was completed in almost the entire country, BNR reports.

The significantly larger area planted to barley, combined with a slight increase in productivity per hectare, resulted in a 40% year-on-year increase in production.

In the case of oilseed rape and rye, however, there is a significant drop – respectively by 26% and 22% less compared to last year.

According to preliminary data of the NSI, during the period July 2023 – May 2024, 5.22 million tons of wheat and 455 thousand tons of barley were exported from Bulgaria. The comparison with the similar period of the last season indicates a more than two-fold increase in the export of barley. In the case of wheat, there was also an increase, although more moderate – by 47 percent.

During the period July 23 – May 2024, 99 thousand tons of wheat and 134 thousand tons of rapeseed were imported from abroad, which is respectively 86% and more than three times higher than the level of the previous period.

The latest NSI data showed a strong decrease in the price of bread wheat in our country – by 15.5%.
