147 years ago on June 2, 1876 died from a bullet in the Vrachan Balkan Hristo Botev – a poet, a volcano of passions and love for Bulgaria, and also for his beloved women.

The question of who fired the bullet is disputed.

The regular Turkish army, which surrounded the detachment of Hristo Botev, cuts off the hero’s head and impales it in the center of Vratsa to the horror of the Bulgarians. He is only 28 years old and his little daughter Ivanka is less than two months old.

Over the years June 2 is celebrated with different names, and most recently the day is called the Day of Botev and of those who died for the freedom and independence of Bulgaria. This is how it was recorded in a decision of the Council of Ministers dated May 31, 1993.

Botev’s day was celebrated for the first time in Vratsa and Plovdiv in 1884. It has been officially celebrated since 1901, when Botev Chetniks were present at the celebrations on Mount Vola, today Okolchitsa.

On June 2, 1948, at exactly 12 o’clock, the first signal was given for a minute’s silence throughout the country.

Today in Plovdiv, the Day of Botev and Heroes will be celebrated in front of the monument of the revolutionary poet in Tsar Simeon’s Garden with a military ritual and the laying of wreaths and flowers. A speech will be delivered by Krum Filipov – poet, writer, theater and film director, winner of the “Plovdiv” Award.

The host will be the actor from the Plovdiv Drama Theater – Ivaylo Hristov.

At 12 o’clock the sirens will sound to pay tribute to the immortal hero and to all Bulgarians who gave their lives for freedom.
