It seems to be just a matter of time before Kylian Mbappé signs for Real Madrid and that theory has been reinforced by recent statements by Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, in which he makes a “cordial call” to European clubs to release their elite footballers for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
Mbappé’s presence at the Olympics is one of the topics of debate in the host country. Although the player has expressed that it is “a dream” to be able to compete in Paris 2024, he also accepted that it will depend on the team he signs with to make it possible for him to attend the event, and this is where Real Madrid takes center stage.
What Macron said about Mbappé and Real Madrid
Multiple reports indicate that negotiations between Madrid and Mbappé are very advanced, but the president of the Spanish team, Florentino Pérez, has reportedly taken a firm position regarding not releasing players for the Games, since it is not a mandatory FIFA tournament.
“We will do everything possible to have a competitive team at the Games. I have confidence in the French and European clubs,” Macron said on Monday.
“Are you referring to the president of Real Madrid?” asked the journalist from the RMC Sport channel, to which the French president explained: “Exactly, when talking about European clubs, that’s what I was referring to.”
Macron fears football in Paris 2024 will be affected by lack of stars
It should be noted that, beyond the possible signing of Mbappé with Real Madrid, the Spanish team has other French players in its squad, such as Aurélien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy, who will be subject to the same refusal from the Madrid president.
“I have not spoken to him (Mbappé) about this, but I hope his club will allow it,” Macron said.
“We have the Euros before us, that is the problem. I think the clubs have to give in so that we can have a great spectacle. That is one of my fears,” he added.
Kylian Mbappé himself recently stated that he plans to make his sporting future at club level known before the European Championship next June, with Real Madrid being the clear destination for the Paris Saint-Germain striker.
