We know OLED TV, but what exactly is QD-OLED?

by time news

Technology company Sony unveiled its new TVs at its CES press conference. The significant news from its announcement is the A95K series – because it’s an entirely new type of OLED panel. Sony calls it QD-OLED and promises upgraded colors and much improved viewing angles, thanks to XR Triluminos Max technology.

The A95K comes in sizes of 55 and 65 inches. It comes with all the featured features like webcam, games and familiar inputs. The significant advantage according to the company is that the colors will be deeper and more saturated in the light areas, while regular OLED tends to be whiter and less colorful.

The difference between the panels lies in the way they produce the image. The OLED monitors developed by LG are actually considered WRGB OLED. What does that mean? They use OLEDs that emit blue and yellow colors to create pixels of white light, which are transmitted through color filters and so they can create red, green and blue pixels.

Incidentally here, the QD-OLED changes this, by emitting blue light through quantum dots thus converting some of the blue to red and green without the need for a color filter. And because they do not lose light to light filters, TVs of this type need to be improved in terms of brightness.

Basically, the leading companies in the development of these screens supply to other companies, so LG for example provides screens to various companies as well as Samsung. When asked around the world by Sony who provided the panels for the new technology, Sony said it could not disclose the information in question. Indeed, rumors point to Samsung, which announced its ambitions for QD-OLED as early as 2019 with an investment of $ 11 billion.

Alongside this series, the company has announced other models like the A80K and-A90K, using OLED panels as we know them. The A90K will come in sizes 42 and 48 inches and the 80 will come in sizes 55, 65 -77 inches.

In addition, Sony introduced at its press conference Mini-LED, Z9K and X95K models. What does Mini-LED Mean? In practice, these are screens that contain more small LEDs and lighting areas compared to a standard LED screen – which provides a more colorful and accurate image. The screens in question incorporated XR Backlight Master Drive, an algorithm that controls and manages the lighting and the various lighting areas. Both screens will come in 75 and 85-inch sizes, while the X95K will also come in a 65-inch size.
